The Philips Future Health Index 2025 highlights a significant trust gap between clinicians and patients concerning AI, despite AI’s potential to double patient capacity by 2030.
The Growing Healthcare Crisis
The healthcare sector faces mounting challenges, with 33% of patients reporting deteriorating health conditions due to appointment delays [5]. The situation is particularly severe for specialist consultations, where wait times can extend up to 70 days [1]. Adding to this crisis, healthcare professionals are losing approximately 23 full days annually due to data management issues, with 75% reporting lost clinical time from incomplete patient information [5].
AI’s Promise and Professional Confidence
Healthcare professionals demonstrate strong confidence in AI’s potential, with 79% believing it could improve patient outcomes [3]. The technology shows particular promise in enhancing operational efficiency, with 85% of healthcare professionals believing AI can alleviate administrative burdens [2]. Furthermore, 74% anticipate improved patient access through increased capacity and individual patient time [2]. The most significant impact could come by 2030, with AI potentially doubling patient capacity through automation and clinical assistance [5].
The Trust Divide
Despite professional optimism, a significant trust gap exists between healthcare providers and patients. While nearly 63% of healthcare professionals believe AI could improve patient outcomes, only 33% of patients aged 45 or over share this positive outlook [2]. Patient skepticism is particularly evident in clinical applications, with 52% expressing concerns about losing the human touch in care [6]. However, patient trust increases to 85% when healthcare providers are directly involved in decision-making [4].
Building Trust Through Collaboration
Healthcare professionals are actively engaging in AI development, with 69% involved in creating new digital health technologies. However, only 38% believe current AI tools effectively meet real-world needs [5].
